Is Kid Rock Running for Senate? Singer Teases ‘Major Announcement’

Either Kid Rock is actually going to run for Senate in his home state of Michigan in 2018, or he’s got one heck of a marketing team. After fans discovered the website, Rock responded to their questions — well, sort of.

“I have had a ton of emails and texts asking me if this website is real,” Rock wrote on social media on Wednesday (July 12). “The answer is an absolute YES. Stay tuned, I will have a major announcement in the near future.”

On Thursday (July 13), Rock expanded upon his original statement, revealing new music, a new record label deal and an impending tour, but not yet completely confirming or denying a political run. “Like politicians write books during their campaigns, I’m planning on putting out music during mine,” he says.

While is, indeed, a functioning website, there’s not much there at the moment: a photo of Rock; a GIF that rotates through some of Rock’s song lyrics, edited to be campaign slogans of sorts (“In Rock We Trust,” “Pimp of the Nation,” “You Never Met a Politician Quite Like Me,” for example); a spot to sign up for email updates; and a link to a webstore full of “Kid Rock for U.S. Senate” merch. Oh, and the phrase “Are You Scared?”

Country Music’s Most Political Artists

Rock’s “Kid Rock for U.S. Senate” webstore contains merch such as a lawn sign and a bumper sticker; however, it’s important to note that the store is hosted by the Warner Bros. record label. Also important to note: There is no Federal Election Committee filing about Rock’s alleged run for Senate. An FEC spokesperson confirmed to CNN on Wednesday that the Committee has not yet received a filing under Kid Rock, nor under Robert Ritchie or Robert James Ritchie, his given name; however, she also said to check back.

The idea of Rock running for Senate isn’t entirely out of the blue, however: In February, the Republican Party of Michigan mentioned Rock as a potential candidate during their convention. If it’s true, Rock will be running against incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow; on Twitter on Wednesday, she acknowledged the rumor, saying, “I know we both share a love of music. I concede he’s better at playing guitar …”

In late 2016, Rock began selling a line of merchandise in support of Trump’s then-recent election victory. He was recently invited to dinner at the White House, along with Sarah Palin, Ted Nugent, Nugent’s wife Shemane and Rock’s fiancee Audrey.
