Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to reunite with ‘The Master‘ director Paul Thomas Anderson for his latest film, ‘Inherent Vice.’

Variety reports that Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to star in Paul Thomas Anderson’s adaptation of ‘Inherent Vice,’ based on the novel by notoriously reclusive author Thomas Pynchon. Robert Downey Jr.’s name was originally tossed around as leading man for the film, but it seems Phoenix may be his replacement. Charlize Theron has also previously been rumored to join the cast.

Anderson initially wanted to make the film back in 2010, but opted to shoot ‘The Master’ instead. ‘Inherent Vice’ tells the story of a pothead private investigator in LA in the 1960s who goes by the name of Doc Sportello. Sportello’s ex-girlfriend comes to him to investigate a kidnapping plot involving her new boyfriend, a wealthy land developer, but Sportello quickly finds himself in over his head with an investigation that leads him to interact with a bizarre cast of characters with names like Shasta Fay Hepworth and Adrian Prussia.

Phoenix’s work in Anderson’s ‘The Master’ earned him an Oscar nomination for best actor, and with good reason — he gave one of the best performances of his career, making this possible reunion one to look forward to.
