If You Like Really Fresh Fruit and Vegetables, Then Check Out The Abilene Farmer’s Market

There is not much that can compare to the taste of fresh fruits and vegetables.  A juicy cantaloupe or watermelon on a hot summer day like we have here in West Texas, just might make the heat little bit more bearable.  Maybe you like throwing down on some mixed squash for the grill or make your own fresh salsa.  If you truly like fresh fruits and veggies, then the Abilene Farmer’s Market is for you.

When I was young, I remember my grandpa and grandma always grew their own fruits and veggies.  They had a pretty nice little garden that had everything from squash, tomatoes and jalapenos, to cantaloupe, watermelon and everything in between.  I loved going out to the garden and picking off a tomato, and pretty much just eating it right off the vine.  Our meals always had some sort of fresh picked vegetable, fruit, or both. To me, it was what a good home cooked meal was all about – meat, taters, and fresh fruit and veggies.

Unfortunately, my grandparents are no longer here.  But, their knowledge has been passed on to me and my brothers, plus, my Dad is actually a master gardener. Even though I know how to grow a variety of things, I simply don’t have a lot of time these days to get out and make my own garden…not to mention the fact that I’m just plain lazy.

Luckily for me, and others like me, there is the Abilene Farmer’s Market.

Sure, you can get your fruit and veggies at the store, but, there is just nothing like getting straight from the farmers who grow them.

You can check out the Abilene Farmer’s Market every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at the corner of North 3rd and Mesquite.  They are usually open right at sunrise.  Check out their Facebook page, if you want to know more.

I usually try to go on a Saturday morning just because I have to work during the week.  If you go, I recommend you get there as  early as possible for the best stuff.

So, do you ever check out the Abilene Farmer’s Market?  Are there any other cool farmer’s markets in the Abilene area that you want to share?
