"He Stopped Loving Her Today" was not written by George Jones but by Marty Robbins' piano player Bobby Braddock. Braddock said he and Curly Putman were songwriting one day when they started making funeral home jokes and dark humor.

That's when Bobby told Curly of his idea for a song about a love so strong, that it would only go away if he died. The song was presented to George Jones's producer Billy Sherrill who turned it down for two years because he didn't like the ending.
