Gerard Butler to Take Over Patrick Swayze’s Role in the ‘Point Break’ Remake

Point Break Remake Gerard Butler Patrick Swayze
Twentieth Century Fox

As we previously reported, 20th Century Fox has plans in the works to remake ‘Point Break,’ the classic undercover-agent movie that starred Keanu Reeves as he worked to infiltrate a gang of bank robbers/surfers led by Patrick Swayze. But who is the right fit to assume one of these roles, you ask? The answer, according to the studio, is ‘Olympus Has Fallen‘ action star Gerard Butler.

Butler already has some surfer experience (or, rather, experience with playing a surfer) under his belt, having starred as real-life surfer Frosty Hesson in ‘Chasing Mavericks.’ It’ll surely come in handy as The Hollywood Reporter reports that the actor is in final negotiations to succeed Swayze in the role of Bodhi, an extreme-sports athlete who uses his trade (including surfing) to seek nirvana. While the original ’90s film was set in the California surf scene, the remake will center on the broader world of extreme sports, though there will still be the same plot of an FBI agent coming to infiltrate a crime ring.

Ericson Core, the cinematographer behind the Ben Affleck-led ‘Daredevil’ and 2001′s ‘Fast and Furious,’ will direct the remake from a script penned by Kurt Wimmer.

The team is eyeing this summer as a production start date, though Butler already has a number of projects lined up, including the sequel to ‘Olympus Has Fallen,’ ‘London Has Fallen,’ which is exactly how it sounds. In addition, he’s also set to star as the ancient Egyptian god Set in ‘The Gods of Egypt,’ and he can be seen (or heard) next in this year’s ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2.’
