George Strait Regrets Taking a Break From Writing

Looking at George Strait‘s illustrious career, you may wonder if he’s ever had any regrets, because with 26 studio albums, it really does seem like he’s done everything right.

Strait has had more No. 1 singles than any artist in history — including Elvis. But if there’s one thing he could change, the legendary singer wishes he never stopped writing.

The legend recently opened up about his regrets in a recent radio interview. “If I have one regret in my career — which has been great and it’s hard to come up with one — but, if I have one [it's] that I kind of quit writing for years,” he admits (quote via CMT).

The ‘I Believe’ singer adds, “Because starting out, I loved to write and wrote a lot and then I just kind of got away from it.”

Although Strait didn’t pen his own songs for many, many years, he made a big turnaround while working on his 2009 album ‘Twang,’ writing three tunes with his son Bubba and the talented Dean Dillon. That sparked something in Strait, because he’s credited with writing or co-writing seven tracks on ‘Here for a Good Time’ and four on ‘Love Is Everything.’

“I found great songs from great writers in Nashville,” the icon shares. “But now I’m getting back into it more, so I’m enjoying that a lot.” Fans should expect to hear more from the singer — who told Billboard he has a lot left in the tank — which will hopefully include more self-penned tracks.

Strait will embark on the last leg of his final Cowboy Rides Away Tour this January with a plethora of country music superstars and even more of his hit songs. The King of Country may have one regret, but with his unbridled talent and support of his devoted fans, he can turn that into determination, only to add to his collection of country music hits.
