Genndy Tartakovsky to Direct 3D ‘Popeye’

Popeye
Paramount

The cartoon character ‘Popeye’ is missing an eye, right? He’s always got one closed and he is a sailor, so it’s likely that he lost one handling hooks, or fighting with some aquatic creature. But even though Popeye can’t see stereoscopically, he’s getting the animated 3D treatment from director Genndy Tartakovsky.

Tartakovsky is best known for his television work, where he was the mastermind behind such shows as ‘Dexter’s Laboratory’, ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ and ‘Samurai Jack.’ He recently made the leap to the big screen with ‘Hotel Transylvania‘ which hits theaters this September.

This comes from Variety, and what it suggests is that Tartakovsky either hit it out of the park with ‘Transylvania’ or saved the production (he came on a year ago, which in animation is like coming on a week or so before shooting). Regardless, Sony must be happy with what he did, and they’re looking to keep working with him… at least until ‘Transylvania’ comes out.

This wouldn’t be Popeye’s first time going feature length, as Robert Altman directed a version in 1980 which starred Robin Williams and Shelly Duvall (as pictured above). It’s insane, and – though considered a fiasco at the time – has grown a cult following, partly because of the soundtrack by Harry Nilsson.
