Battleship has been a board game as long as I can remember. However, it got it's start as a pencil and paper game during World War I and has now moved to the big screen as a movie to be released May of next year. Check out the movie trailer and more history after the jump.

The pencil and paper game version was invented in the 1900's by Clifford Von Wickler, he never patented his version.  Therefore, in the 1930's Milton Bradley picked it up, turned it into a game for the public, still using the pencil/paper version, and called it  "Broadsides, the Game of Naval Strategy".

The object of the game is that each player has their fleet of  ships, arranged horizontally or vertically, on a grid hidden from their opponent.  Each players ships encompass a number of consecutive squares.  Each player takes turns trying to guess grid shots that will sink their opponents ship.  Winning player is determined when the other players ships have all been sunk.

The game has previously been released as computer games and even as a mobile phone game in addition to the old fashioned board game.   There have also been varying versions of the game over the years, the latest in 2010 when island battles were added.

It is now being released as a feature film directed by Peter Berg for Universal Studios, due for release May of 2012.

The cast includes names such as Liam Neeson, Brooklyn Decker, Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard and even musician Rihanna.
