Rudy’s List of Foods and Snacks to Keep On Hand for the Kids During Spring Break
On a recent shopping trip to the grocery store with my wife Donna, I noticed she was loading up on the kind of foods our kids and grandchildren really like. I asked her "what gives?" She told me, "spring break is almost here and the kids need things they can eat and snack on, that they can prepare quickly and safely. After raising eight kids I'm pretty sure Donna knows what she's doing. I thought I'd share with you what we/she keeps on hand in the Fernandez household around spring break time.
Noodles, noodles and more noodles we buy these in bulk, because are a big hit with the Fernandez kids. Whether microwavable cup noodles or the Ramen kind there's always someone making noodles.
Macaroni and cheese, it doesn't matter if it's the microwavable cup kind or the standard mac and cheese, it's all good at the Fernandez house. It was made into a gourmet meal by the Fernandez clan, when one of the added some sliced up wieners in their mac and cheese.
PB&J (peanut butter and jelly) need I say more? Although I've never been a big fan. It wasn't until my daughter insisted on making lunch for me one day. Yep, it was a PB&J sandwich and might I add, it was the best PB&J I've ever had. To this day I don't make PB&J sandwiches my daughter does.
I think this is the easiest thing a kid can prepare for themselves. It came as no surprise to me when my wife said "we have to get the good turkey and chicken cold cuts because they won't eat the cheap stuff, it just goes to waste".
This one is so obvious, I've seen my kids eating cereal at all hours of the day or night. I know that cereal is a base staple in a kids life. I don't think I've ever seen the top of my fridge without a half dozen boxes of cereal there.
Cheese is another one of those foods that I don't think a child could survive without. I see little people running in and out of my kitchen with a hand full of either cheese sticks or cheese cubes.
Okay, I will admit the snacks Donna buys are awesome. I love the nuts, fruit chews, protein bars and fruit. Keeping snacks on hand will help tide the kids over until supper time.
