Florida Georgia Line have enjoyed unprecedented success in their first five years, and that success has continued with the duo's record breaking new single, 'Dirt'. The songwriters explain the origin of the heartfelt country ballad.

According to CMT, the song that broke Taylor Swift's record for most added single in one week has down home roots. Chris Tompkins, co-writer of 'Dirt explains, "My hometown is pretty much an oak tree, a volunteer fire department and a high school football team. Oh, and a funeral home." So those opening lines like "You get your hands in it/Plant your roots in it" came from Tompkins.

Co-writer Rodney Clawson adds, "I just kind of threw out the '10 percent down, white-picket-fence house' line. That kind of sealed the deal on the song, kind of nailed it home. We kind of got a girl in there a little bit, but then we want to marry this girl, we want to build her a house and raise a family and all that."

However it came together, the new Florida Georgia Line single has erupted onto country music radio, and FGL singer Brian Kelley says there was an immediate attachment to the song, and he feels 'Dirt' has staying power. Kelley says, "It has that Garth factor. Everyone's gonna be singing that song for a long time. We relate to it, man. It just feels like our lives."
