It seems that once you are diagnosed you receive all kinds of emails about cancer and it's prevention. That's great but what about those who haven't been diagnosed? Well I'm here to help you out, I'll pass along the information that has been given to me, especially if it's easy. I recently received information about fall foods that are good for you especially when it comes to fighting cancer. Stacy Kennedy who is a senior nutritionist with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston says seasonal fruits and veggies provide many cancer fighting nutrients. All you have to remember are the first 5 letters of the alphabet.

    %22A%22 is for Apple

Apples have always been known to keep doctors away but it seems they are major fighters of cancers of the throat, mouth, colon, lung and even breast. They contain a nutrient called Quercitin that protects cells DNA from getting damaged. It's those damaged cells that can lead to cancer. So grab an apple and eat the whole thing, including the skin (that's where most of the nutrients are).

    %22B%22 is for Berries

Berries are good and juicy and easy little finger foods. Cranberries are especially great and in season during this holiday season. They contain benzoic acid that has been shown to inhibit growth of lung cancer, colon cancer and even some forms of leukemia. So stock up on those berries now and eat a handful throughout the rest of the year.

    %22C%22 is for Color

Foods with lots of color are higher in cancer fighting nutrients. Find seasonal vegetables and fruits that are bright in color like beets, broccoli and carrots. I know that broccoli has lots of cancer fighting antioxidants and is one food that you will always find in cancer fighting literature.

%22D%22 is for Dark Leafy Vegetables

Leafy vegetables, the darker the better, like Kale are detoxifying foods. They are rich in phytonutrients or indoles, they are known for detoxifying the liver. Again, broccoli can be included, as well as cabbage and Brussels sprouts. I know, sometimes we don't like these foods but they have their benefits. I know I have acquired a taste for some of them as I've gotten older, maybe there is an underlying meaning in that!

    %22E%22 is for Everything Orange

This time of year you can find all kinds of 'orange' fruits and vegetables. Think pumpkins, carrots, sweet potatoes/yams all of which contain carotenoids. These carotenoids are linked to prevention of colon, prostate, breast and lung cancer.
