‘Fantastic Four’ Reboot To Get a “Substantial” Rewrite

Fantastic Four reboot
Marvel

Well, it looks like the ‘Fantastic Four‘ reboot may not make that proposed March 6, 2015 release date. ‘Chronicle‘ director Josh Trank‘s take on Marvel’s first family of superheroes is currently undergoing a major rewrite from screenwriter Simon Kinberg, which makes us really wonder what the heck is going on behind the scenes of this movie.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Kinberg will also receive a producer credit on the film, which certainly confirms that this is no simple polish. Whatever he’s doing to the script, it’s big and if definitely leaves us wondering if the production will actually be ready to roll early next year. It also leaves us wondering why so many screenwriters have tried their hand at this job and why Trank and Fox have consistently replaced them. Kinberg is the fifth writer (that we know of) to work on the film, following Jeremy Slater, Michael Green, Seth Grahame-Smith and T.S. Nowlin. However, Kinberg already has significant experience with the superhero genre, having written ‘X-Men: First Class’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ so he feels like a natural fit for the material.

To be fair, a ‘Fantastic Four’ movie a tough nut to crack. As iconic as Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and The Thing are in the comic book world, they’re easily one of the weirdest and most old-fashioned superhero teams of all time. And the studio has a right to be worried: 2005′s ‘Fantastic Four’ was a dismal creative failure that transformed the FF into bickering sitcom characters and the sequel was all of that plus poor box office. We could take the news of this screenwriter rotating door as a good thing (they want to get it right and won’t stop until they do), but it’s also easy to feel incredibly cynical (no one over there knows what they want and everything is a rushed mess).

Will we get a new ‘Fantastic Four’ on March 6, 2015? Your guess is as good as ours.
