Memphis dignitaries and music fans will gather at Graceland to celebrate the birthday of Elvis Presley, who would have turned 78 today (Jan. 8). The ceremony will feature a cake cutting, while a new Elvis exhibit also opens today.

The King of Rock and Roll was born in Tupelo, Miss. on Jan. 8, 1935, and moved to Memphis with his parents when he was 13. He bought the Graceland mansion in 1957, and died there on Aug. 16,1977 at the age of 42.

Presley's birthday is always cause for a public celebration in Memphis. This year the festivities began on Saturday (Jan. 5), when the Memphis Symphony Orchestra presented a concert to mark the 40th anniversary of Presley's landmark 'Aloha from Hawaii' television special.

The ceremony Tuesday will include a cake cutting, as well as a proclamation naming Jan. 8 as Elvis Presley Day. The new exhibit that opens today at the tourist attraction across the street from the Graceland mansion documents Presley's movies and concerts in Hawaii.
