Public Hearing for Proposed E-Cigarette Ban This Morning During City Council Meeting
Abilene has been in an uproar since the news broke that the city council was considering the ban of e-cigarettes in public places. A recent poll shows that 76% of Abilene opposes such ban and a public hearing has been set for those for and against can have their voices heard.
The public hearing is set for THIS MORNING, July 24th, during the city council meeting at 8:30am. So make sure you attend and speak your mind, whether you’re for the ban or against it.
City Council Chambers are located at 555 Walnut.
Abilene instituted a smoking ordinance at the beginning of 2007. The current smoking ordinance pertains to tobacco related smoking (cigarettes, cigars, etc), but an addendum could mean the addition of e-cigarettes.
While the ‘jury is still out’ on the health benefits and side-effects of vaping (e-cigarettes), many use the device as an aid to quit smoking traditional tobacco.
Please keep in mind, this is only consideration of adding e-cigarettes to the current smoking ordinance. E-cigarettes would not be illegal in Abilene, just not permitted in public places and places of employment (like smoking is now).
Don’t forget to attend the city council meeting July 24th. At that time is when they’ll hold the public forum for those for or against the proposition.
Here are the results from the poll about the proposed e-cigarette ban.
