The National Transportation Safety Board has recommended that states lower blood alcohol content (BAC) that constitutes drunk driving from .08 to .05 to help lower alcohol related traffic deaths. Do you agree with this move?

Currently, all 50 states have set a BAC of .08, which is the percentage of alcohol by volume in the blood. If you are over that limit, you go to jail. Simple enough.

According to the NTSB, each year, nearly 10,000 people die in alcohol-related traffic accidents and 170,000 are injured. Those are not good numbers at all, so the NTSB is recommending that the BAC level should go to .05.

More than 100 countries that have already have already adopted the .05 limit and have seen a decrease in alcohol related traffic deaths. In fact, according to NBC news, when Australia changed the BAC level to .05, there was an 5-18 percent drop in traffic fatalities.

Sarah Longwell, the managing director at the American Beverage Institute, a restaurant trade association, called the idea “ludicrous.”

"Moving from 0.08 to 0.05 would criminalize perfectly responsible behavior. Further restricting the moderate consumption of alcohol by responsible adults prior to driving does nothing to stop hardcore drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel."

So, what are your thoughts on this? Do you agree with the NTSB's recommendation to lower the blood alcohol level to .05?
