Dierks Bentley's "Somewhere on a Beach" lyrics will have country music fans longing for the sun and surf this summer, and according to one of the songwriters, that's exactly how the idea came about.

Michael Tyler, Jaron Boyer and Josh Mirenda got the idea for the song while at a writers retreat in Destin, Fla. "We had written two or three songs in those two days, and the beach was right outside the door," Tyler recalls to Taste of Country. "You could see the beach, so it's hard to concentrate. So we came up with the idea for 'Somewhere on a Beach,' and we were talking about how we would write it, but we looked outside and there was the beach, so we went outside to the beach," he recounts with a laugh.

A week later, Tyler was at the office of his publishing company, Peer Music, in Nashville. He stopped in to say hello to Boyer and Mirenda, who were in a writing session with a Los Angeles-based writer named Alexander "Nezzo" Palmer. They were listening to a track Palmer had constructed with Dave Kuncio, and while they really liked the music, they were stuck for an idea.

"And I was like, 'Man, this is awesome ... why don't y'all write "Somewhere on a Beach" to it?' So I kinda just threw out a line: 'Bet you think I'm sittin at home / Bet you think that I'm all alone.' And they're like, 'Come in and shut the door,'" he recalls.

"So I came in there, and I guess they had forgotten about the idea, but we wrote that thing ... it was just like a wildfire, throwing out lines. It was exciting, and we finished the song in I think 2 1/2 hours ...  track and everything done."

I just happened to walk in the room and spark something up with the guys, and now it's a single. It blows my mind, still to this day.

The "Somewhere on a Beach" lyrics talk about getting over a breakup with a carefree hookup: “I’m somewhere on a beach, sipping something strong / Got a new girl, she got it going on / We drink all day and party all night / I’m way too gone to have you on my mind / She got a body, and she’s naughty / And she got me like you ain’t ever got me / I’m getting sun, getting some and I ain’t slept in a week / Yeah I’m somewhere on a beach.”

Tyler is also a recording artist, and he originally intended to cut the song for his project. "But when someone like Dierks Bentley loves a song and is very excited about it, and there's talk of a single — you know, I was a songwriter first, and that's what turns me on," he says. "So we handed it over to Dierks and let them do their thing on it, and we were excited about that ... It happened real quick. It normally doesn't, but Dierks heard it, and loved the song, and flipped about it, and they took it into the studio a week and a half, two weeks after."

Bentley's rendition is quite different than the original demo. "It was very pop, it was super pop, and that's why I was so surprised that Dierks was gonna cut it," Tyler admits. "But when he cut it, he did a Dierks Bentley thing, and it worked out a hundred percent. So amazing."

So well, in fact, that Bentley chose it as the lead single from his highly-anticipated album, Black, and even named his upcoming summer tour after the song. It's a pivotal career moment for Tyler, one that he can scarcely believe.

"It's my first single as a songwriter. This helps me a lot, especially on my project and people saying, 'He's got the lead single on Dierks' record, maybe we should pay attention to him now,'" he says with another laugh.

"It's crazy. Me and Jaron Boyer were roommates for about two or three years when I first moved to Nashville at the end of 2012, and me and him would put money together to eat. Now we've got this single on the radio, and it's really an amazing thing. We're super lucky ... I just happened to walk in the room and spark something up with the guys, and now it's a single. It blows my mind, still to this day."
