Co-Anchors Quit On-Air After News Broadcast

Cindy Michaels and Tony Consiglio anchored the evening news together for WVII in Bangor, Maine.

On Tuesday, they resigned their positions together right before signing off for the final time.

“Some recent developments have come to our attention … and departing together is the best alternative we can take,” Consiglio, 28, explained before the broadcast ended.

While their dramatic on-air resignation was civil and fairly vague, there were not surprisingly some pretty serious issues was behind it.

“There was a constant disrespecting and belittling of [the] staff and we both felt there was a lack of knowledge from ownership and upper management in running a newsroom to the extent that I was not allowed to structure and direct them professionally,” Michaels, who also served as the station’s news director, told the Bangor Daily News.

Both Michaels and Consiglio had both worked at the station since 2006. Neither had told anybody else at WVII that they were planning to quit, let alone do it on-air. Instead they kept it a secret for fear that if management learned of their intentions, they would immediately be taken off the air without getting to say goodbye to their loyal watchers.

WVII vice president and general manager Mike Palmer called the situation “unfortunate but not unexpected.”
