Chris Stapleton may be a perennial favorite at awards shows, winning multiple trophies at events such as the 2018 ACMs, Grammys and, most recently, CMA Awards, on Wednesday evening (Nov. 14), but the country giant says he never takes any of his accolades for granted.

"I'm always genuinely surprised to win anything, and I'm always grateful for it," Stapleton told media backstage at Wednesday's ceremony, after accepting his awards for Song of the Year and Single of the Year (for "Broken Halos" in both categories) as well as for Male Vocalist of the Year.

"These things are fantastic to win, but when you get nominated and invited to these kind of parties, you've already won, and you've already gotten far beyond anything anyone who's a musician could ever dream of," he goes on to say. "[We're] getting to do so many great things with our time and with music that it's amazing."

As a songwriter, winning in the categories of Song and Single of the Year -- and particularly alongside the songwriters with whom he created the track -- makes the recognition particularly important to him. "It's extremely meaningful, because on paper, and in chart performance and all those sorts of things, there were certainly more deserving songs," Stapleton admits. "I think that's worth saying. On the flip side, it is very meaningful to me, because I consider myself first and foremost a songwriter."

As for sharing that award with longtime co-writer Mike Henderson, who also took the stage during the 2018 CMA Award ceremony? "To win awards with him means so very much to me that I'm not sure I can describe it," Stapleton says.
