Last summer was a scorcher in Abilene. A record number of 100+ degree days, wildfires burning throughout west Texas, and no rain made the summer months rough in 2011. But weather forecasters are saying that the summer of 2012 should be considerably more tolerable
Along with the weather, Texas camping season is heating up. Memorial Day weekend is not far off, when so many campgrounds are filled with families who want to get away from civilization and enjoy the outdoors, fresh air, and relaxation. If you're looking for a quick weekend trip, there are a lot of choices around west Texas.
Memorial Day is a time we remember those who died fighting for our country. Being a national holiday and the kick off to the summer season, you should be aware of what’s open and what’s closed in the Abilene area.
Steve Azar has just released, "Soldier Song" and has dedicated it to all the soldiers serving and will be giving a portion of the song's profits to a very special cause the "Wounded Warriors Project." This July 4th, it seems as if there are a lot of singers and song-writers that are either writing songs for our troops or are dedicating songs or the entire albums to military enlisted. Just a few days ago I reported about the Gary Morris song "Faith and Freedom" and how he was dedicating it to everyone that is or has ever served.
I sure love it when our family comes together to celebrate whatever occasion may be at hand. Good food, lots of love, plenty of laughter and we can guarantee the celebration will move into the silly department in short order. Memorial Day was a great time to be had by all. I spent it with many of my relatives some of whom have served in our great Nations awesome Military and some that are still serving. While in due respect and at their request I won't post their pictures, I will share a couple of silliness pictures (of other family members) that had us all chuckling.
As we all gather with friends and family to celebrate Memorial Day we sometimes forget the real meaning behind the holiday.
With all that is going on all weekend long I had a real dilemma. What to do this weekend? I've been invited to participate in several activities like, barbecue at the lake with friends, doing the "Movie Hopping" with a couple of my kids, camping at the state park with some of my scouting friends or back yard barbecuing with the in-laws. All of the a fore mentioned are great to be doing but most require "time and planning" the two things I can not do, mainly because I'm working on location broadcasting live at the car lots. See, this is the time of year when the car dealers shell out their best deals to clear-out inventory for the up-coming next years models. Here is what I decided to do on such a short leash. Inspecting the bottom of a local pool.
I just experienced my first brain freeze as an adult, and I cannot say it was a pleasant experience. I had my very first ever, cherry-limeade slush. While I was broadcasting live on location at one of the local car lots, the new car sales-manager ordered a cherry-limeade slush for everyone on the lot. I was gracefully declining when he, the sales manager said "drink it don't let it go to waste, besides it's hot out here you need to cool off." That is when a long lost childhood memory returned, "the brain-freeze." After surviving my painful recovery I thought to myself, "what causes these and how do I make them go away?"
Heat-related deaths and illness in the U.S. account for more people dying annually than those killed in hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. Heat related incidents are totally preventable yet annually many people succumb to extreme heat. Historically from 1979-2003, excessive heat exposure caused 8,015 deaths in the United States. In 2001, 300 deaths were caused by excessive heat exposure. Here are some tips to follow during hot-dry weather.
On Memorial Day, we commemorate all the U.S. soldiers who've died while serving our country. With so many of our servicemen and women currently on dangerous overseas assignments, it's also a time to think about their sacrifice, and the sacrifice of their families back home.
In these videos, families of soldiers get the surprise and relief of a lifetime when their loved ones return home from duty unannounced. You'll really want to grab a box of tissues before watching.
While summer doesn't officially start until June 21, Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning to the hottest season at the movies.
Summer loses some of its meaning when you're an adult, since it no longer comes with a moths-long break from the grind.
Nevertheless, we can all still enjoy a good movie about summer vacations. After the jump, check out eight of our favorites.
