Carrie Underwood ‘Can’t Handle It’ When Celebrities Can’t Spell

Don’t expect to catch Carrie Underwood making spelling or grammar errors anytime soon. And if you know anything about the country songstress’ background, that shouldn’t surprise you. The ‘American Idol’ winner graduated magna cum laude from Northeastern State University with a communications degree. Though she’s a singing celeb now, Underwood’s focus was once journalism, so she still has an eye for her first love — good grammar.

The ‘Blown Away’ singer recently dished about her big pet peeve in an interview with Elle Canada. Underwood graces the cover of the same issue, wearing a sassy printed skirt (complete with sequins!), a pink top and a trendy necklace.

The self-professed “English nerd” told her interviewer that she just can’t stand spelling and grammar mistakes, especially when it comes to her fellow stars.

“That drives me insane,” she said, according to “I can’t handle it when celebrities can’t spell or don’t know the most basic grammar. That might be because I’m an English nerd.”

The fact that Underwood has pet peeves just like a normal person shows that she really does try to live a traditional lifestyle, even though her superstar status makes her far from typical.

“We live in such a weird world — it’s not reality. I’m doing photo shoots and music videos and singing onstage with a million people in front of me screaming,” she says. “It’s not real, but it’s fun. I’m singing to normal people, so I want to be normal. I don’t want to sing to the .005% of people who have my job.”

Obviously, an obsession with proper grammar and spelling habits isn’t every country star’s forte — Underwood’s penchant for accuracy isn’t exactly normal, per se. But just like the rest of us, she isn’t a ‘Good Girl’ all the time.

“I grew up listening to ’80s glam hair metal,” the songstress admitted to the Boot. “Then, when I got older in the ’90s, the whole grunge thing was huge and I was totally into it. I was all about Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Nirvana and all of that stuff.”

It’s hard to believe that this country music princess was once into grunge and metal music, but those influences seem to have faded away. Her latest album, ‘Blown Away,’ is mostly country with a little pop mixed in, which her fans seem to like, as it debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 and Country Albums charts.
