Brandi Carlile appeared onstage at the 2019 Grammy Awards on Sunday night (Feb. 10) to perform a moving version of her four-times-nominated song "The Joke." Carlile delivered the powerful message with her characteristic soaring vocals.

The audience was on their feet and moved to tears before Carlile finished the song. Numerous artists could be spotted singing along and cheering in approval.

"I just feel like it's an important song at this time, and in this country," Carlile says of "The Joke," "and I think that that song's success says more about our nation's willingness to receive it than it does actually what I'm saying and what I'm doing ...

"It's music with a message, and it's a harsh message," she adds. "It's a message about needing to do better ... and our need for understanding and acceptance."

Carlile is the most-nominated woman at the 2019 Grammy Awards. She performed the song after winning the trophy for Best American Roots Song, and Best American Roots Performance, and Best Americana Album for By the Way, I Forgive You, the project on which the song appears. She's also nominated for Song of the Year and Album of the Year this year.
