Miley Cyrus has been a hot topic this week following her hosting gig at Sunday's MTV VMA Awards. But while her usual wild, risque behavior might be enough to make most fathers cringe, that's not true of her own dad, Billy Ray Cyrus.

"My advice is still the same for Miley as it's always been," the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer told ET on the red carpet. "Do what you do because you love it, and not because you have to. If you ain't having fun, it ain't working. Enjoy what you're doing and stay positive."

The 22-year-old seems to be following her father's wisdom. She knows how to have fun and entertain in the process, having evolved from conservative Disney star to wild-child superstar in just a matter of years, but she's always herself.

Miley nearly bared all during a number of costume changes at the 2015 VMAs, where, in addition to hosting, she sang her new single "Dooo It!" alongside drag queens and had an onstage argument with Nicki Minaj. However, along with her provocative antics, the young star participates in many philanthropic initiatives, specifically aiding homeless teenagers, which her father was sure to point out.

"She's always kind of reminded me of a mixture between Lucille Ball and Dolly Parton," Billy Ray continues. "And as I watch Miley evolve, she's taking on more and more of those traits."

One thing is for sure: Miley Cyrus knows how to draw attention.
