Bill Murray only gets cooler with age. Sure, the legendary actor may have gotten pickier with his choice of roles in in recent years, but he’s made up for his reduced screen time by being the Most Awesome Guy On The Planet, appearing in random places and spreading oddball joy wherever he goes. The latest incident involves a bachelor party in Charleston, South Carolina, which Murray crashed to deliver a truly incredible speech.
The video (via Deadspin) works well enough without context, but here’s a little backstory from someone who was there. You know, just in case:
Over Memorial Day weekend, 20 of my buddies from Boston College got together in Charleston for our friend EJ’s bachelor party. At one point during dinner at a steakhouse, one guy goes to the bathroom downstairs and sees Bill Murray sitting with some people with a fishing vest on. We talked to the waiter to see if we could send him some drinks, to which Bill declined. One of my buddies then went down and asked if he’d come up and say a few words for EJ and got a “No thanks.” My buddy comes back up dejected and tells us it’s not going to happen. Two minutes later, Bill f*cking Murray walks into the room and gives this speech.
In the past, Murray has crashed kickball games, joined karaoke parties, and commandeered bars, so him making a wry and moving speech at a stranger’s bachelor party is perfectly in line with his normal behavior. The speech is brief, but Murray compares bachelor parties to funerals (in a good way!) and suggests a foolproof way of discovering if someone is truly the love of your life (it involves a plane ticket and couple of far-off destinations). It’s very funny, but it’s also moving and honest. You can see Murray’s honestly shine through any snark or self-deprecation.
The ending is perfect: Murray leads everyone in lifting the groom-to-be off his feet, but he instantly escapes in the commotion, slipping out before anyone can notice that he’s gone. Bill f*ckin’ Murray, man.
