Battlefield 4′s Story Bridges Single Player and Multiplayer

While the star of any Battlefield game is the multiplayer, Battlefield 4 aims to make its campaign mode more compelling than ever.

An article on CVG features a brief interview with Battlefield 4 creative director Lars Gustavsson and his thoughts on Battlefield 4′s single player mode.

“The future will tell, but where we come from we do single player because we want to and we’ve learned a lot while doing it, and I think we have a great story to tell,” Gustavsson said.

The main thing DICE wanted to accomplish with Battlefield 4′s story mode is the combination of single player and multiplayer components, which is something that’s seen throughout the whole game. For example, Levolution came from single player and the ability to use one’s squad in the story mode comes directly from the multiplayer mode.

One of the criticisms of Battlefield 3′s story mode was that it was really restrictive and didn’t feature much exploration, which is strange for a Battlefield game. Much of the gameplay had you going from point to point and neutralizing enemies in a rather straightforward way.

“First and foremost we’re opening up the encounters more to give you the freedom to decide how to tackle them, whereas in Battlefield 3 it was more ‘pick up that one and kill that one’, which I can agree is not the most exciting way. Players want to feel smart doing what they’re doing,” said Gustavsson.

Battlefield 4 will be released on Oct. 29 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It will also be available as a launch title for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
