The tragic events of yesterday have placed the film industry (and those who write about it) on shaky ground. This is the business of entertainment and entertainment reporting and let’s face it: with twelve people dead and dozens more wounded, the last thing anyone on either side of the Hollywood fence wants to think about is entertainment. Out of respect for the victims of and their families, it is starting to look like box office numbers will not be officially reported this weekend.
With the exception of poor Katy Perry, everyone was a winner at the box office this week. Seriously. Of the top ten films, nine of them either opened well or held well, making this one of the most consistent weekends of the summer season. Filmmakers and studios: pat yourselves on the backs. You’ve earned this one.
When Tom Cruise was cast as Jack Reacher in Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of Lee Child’s novel, ‘One Shot’ (which has since been retitled to ‘Jack Reacher‘), fans of the character were none too pleased. Written as a 6’5″ man with a fifty inch chest and the ability to kill his foes with a single punch, Cruise seemed all kinds of wrong for Child’s soldier-turned-drifter protagonist. With the arrival of a the first ‘Jack Reacher’ trailer, we can all see first hand how Cruise looks in the role.
When ‘Prometheus‘ opened big last month, there was the usual “Ah, so R-rated movies can perform well at the box office!” discussion that tends to happen every year or so. Well, that has nothing on this weekend, which found two R-rated movies topping the box office. And it’s not like ‘Ted‘ and ‘Magic Mike‘ just did okay either…both films opened big, blowing away expectations and leading the charge in one of the most interesting box office weekends of the summer so far.
When Disney bought Marvel a few years back, everyone’s imaginations went into hyperdrive. With Disney’s resources and bank account account at their disposal, surely we’d see our favorite Marvel characters brought to life in new and exciting ways. In fact, the day of the acquisition, your couldn’t browse the internet without stumbling over the question “Will Pixar get to make a Marvel movie?!” in every forum and comments section.
Well, the day has come. Disney’s first stab at an animated Marvel movie has been revealed…and it’s not what you think. In fact, if you guessed this, you’re probably a comic book psychic or something.
When it comes to winning big at the box office, never bet against Pixar. ‘Brave‘ is not only the acclaimed animation studio’s thirteenth film, it is their thirteenth film to open at number one at the box office. It’s a track record that just about everyone else in Hollywood would kill for.
Would you pay one million dollars for a movie poster? With an original one-sheet from Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent masterpiece ‘Metropolis’ going to auction soon, that’s the big question. Commonly cited as the most valuable movie poster in the world, the iconic piece of art is expected to fetch huge piles of cash from a collector with very deep pockets.
Sometimes, you hear news that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Your rational mind denies it. You remind yourself that no one could possibly be that greedy. No one could possibly be that stupid. No film studio could loathe their audience that much. This is a Rumor with a capital “R,” so grab your fistful of salt, but Bloody Disgusting is reporting that the folks at Lionsgate (who recently acquired Summit Entertainment) are already discussing a reboot of the ‘Twilight‘ franchise.
Charlie Sheen, America’s second favorite psychotic madman (ranking behind Mel Gibson, of course), spoke to the New York Times about his new FX show ‘Anger Management‘ and slipped the details about what he plans to do once the show has run its coure. In short, he has no plans. In fact, Sheen made it pretty clear that retirement is on his mind.
Boy, talk about perfect timing. Disney and Pixar’s ‘Brave‘ opens in less than a week, it’s a movie that deals heavily with family and today is Father’s Day. How could a savvy marketing team possibly resist the chance to pull on your heart strings with a special trailer tailored for today?
For those of us who follow the box office, this weekend was a case of deja vu. Once again, ‘Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted‘ headlined the top ten and once again, ‘Prometheus‘ snatched the number two spot. Both films managed to keep their momentum despite the opening of two new releases starring two of the biggest movie stars in the world. That’s good news if you’re ‘Madagascar 3′ or ‘Prometheus,’ but pretty bad news if you’re Tom Cruise or Adam Sandler.
