Former Allman Brothers Band Guitarist Dan Toler Dead at 65
Guitarist “Dangerous” Dan Toler, who was best known for his work with the Allman Brothers Band, has died after a two-year battle with ALS. He was 65 years old.
A post to his Facebook page on Monday (Feb. 25) reads, “It is with great regret and sadness that our dear friend and loved one, Dan Toler, passed away peacefully in his sleep last night. Future service to be announced. Please keep Debbie and the family in your prayers. We would also ask at this time that you would respect the family’s privacy. The Toler family thanks you for all your love and support.â€
Toler first came to public attention with Dickey Betts & Great Southern, playing on their 1977 self-titled debut album. He also played on ‘Atlanta’s Burning Down’ in 1978. Toler and Betts joined the re-formed Allman Brothers Band in 1979, where Toler stayed until 1982, when he joined the Gregg Allman Band along with his brother, David “Frankie” Toler. The brothers appeared on Allman’s hit album ‘I’m No Angel’ and toured with him. Dan Toler went on to perform with a variety of Southern rock and jazz fusion acts.
Toler was diagnosed amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2011. Commonly known as “Lou Gehrig’s disease,â€Â the condition affects the central nervous system and interferes with the way muscles receive messages from the brain.
The guitarist was preceded in death by his brother David, who died on June 4, 2011 from complications after a liver transplant. A post on his Facebook page shows a picture of the brothers with the caption, “Home together, forever!!”
