Alan Jackson Performs ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today’ at George Jones’ Funeral
George Jones' moving funeral service in Nashville was wrapped up fittingly, with a version of 'He Stopped Loving Her Today' performed by country legend Alan Jackson. We're getting the first public look, as the Grand Ole Opry has placed the video online for fans to enjoy.
Under any circumstances, the song is moving - even chilling. In this case, Jackson delivered an absolutely wonderful performance of the Jones classic. Watch it here:
George Jones passed away on April 26. The two country music superstars had known each other for over 25 years, with Jackson making a guest appearance on Jones' 'The Bradley Barn Sessions' in 1994 singing 'A Good Year for the Roses.' Alan interrupted his own performance at the 1999 CMA Awards to sing part of The Possum's hit 'Choices' after the CMA wouldn't allow Jones the opportunity to perform in full during the broadcast.
Jackson's mimicking of Jones' mannerisms and vocal style at the funeral just made his performance of 'He Stopped Loving Her Today' all the more moving, and was an awesome tribute to a man who had such a huge influence on country music - and music in general - for more than a half century. Alan told TMZ after George's passing:
“Well, heaven better get ready for some great country music. Of course, he will always be the greatest singer and interpreter of real country music. There’ll never be another."
