It's no secret that Texas is in a severe drought. This includes the city of Abilene which, according to KTXS TV, could enforce stage 2 water restrictions before the end of the year.

Currently, Abilene is in stage 1 water restrictions. Basically, that means residents can only water once a week, and it must be on the designated date based on your address.

In order to go to stage 2 water restrictions, our water source has to be 17 feet or more below the spillway. Currently, we are 16.4 feet below the spillway. That means we are pretty much a flush away from going to the new water restrictions.

If we do go to stage 2 water restrictions, residents can only water once every other week on their designated day. However, everybody can still water with hoses, drip system or buckets. If you don't adhere to the restrictions, you could be shelling out fines of up to $500.

I'm all about conserving water during this severe drought, but if residents are forced to adhere to water restrictions, then it seems like the city and other businesses throughout town should as well. I can't tell you how many times I've seen businesses, schools and even residents watering more than once a week. I mean, come on, there is no way in the world some people's grass could be that green unless they were watering 3 or 4 times a week. And, don't even get me started on some of the golf courses in town.

Yes, I've heard that some have their own water supply, but most don't. Plus, if you tie in the fact that all of our water bills are going up, nobody is winning here.

The one thing we can do during this drought, is to conserve water. But, everybody has to do it, including businesses and the city.
