More Information

Dia de los Muertos is a holiday that originated in Mexico and celebrated throughout Mexico and the Southwestern United States. This is a colorful, traditional and contemporary festivity that will celebrate ancestral remembrance and harvest season rituals with flair! The Center's Artist Members will pay homage to Clint Hamilton with an original works of art, an altar, favorite foods, music, drink and costume.

Hamilton, who died in 2001, was one of the original artists in the Artists League of Texas, which later became The Center for Contemporary Arts. Hamilton grew up in Abilene but fled as soon as he was able after graduating from Abilene High School. He ended up in New York, where he counted Andy Warhol, Rosalind Russell and Anne Bancroft among his friends and acquaintances. He earned a name for himself as a window dresser at Tiffany's and Bonwit Teller in New York. When he finally returned to Abilene more than 20 years later, he helped transform his hometown from the "cultural wasteland," as he had described it years before.

This celebration will link the Center, downtown Abilene and the regional artists with the Hispanic community, building relationships to achieve their mission of supporting local artists.
